Thinking about allowing pets in the workplace? Wanting to bring your furry friend to work? It’s actually not a bad idea. Did you know that having pets in the workplace is beneficial for both owner and pet? Not only does it reduce stress levels amongst employees and increases happiness and morale, but it also allows pets to be happier too.

They’ll be with their best friend instead of waiting for them alone at home. But before you can consider bringing pets to work, there are a few things that need to be considered so that it’s a safe and happy environment.

Here are a few tips to know for having pets in the workplace:

  1. Is it legal?

While the boss may be okay with having pets in the workplace, it is important to know if they’re allowed in the building. Not only can they be considered to be a workplace hazard, but there also could be some legal troubles if anything serious were to happen. If they’re brought in when they’re not allowed, who knows how much trouble everyone will be in? That’s why before you even consider bringing them in, you need to check with building management first. It is also important for all employees who bring a pet to sign a waiver form so that it removes liability from the company. Once the forms are signed, print out a certificate to show which pets have approval.

  1. Get the Office Involved:

Having pets in the office should be beneficial for everyone, including those who don’t own them. Get the whole office together and make sure that everyone’s okay with little ones running about. If anyone has any allergies, the pets will need stay away from them and potentially be kept in their owner’s office. There also needs to be a limit as to how many pets are allowed each day. If everyone brought their pet, it would be chaos! Create a calendar so that everyone can schedule which days they bring their pet. Don’t worry: every little one will get a turn.

  1. Make Sure Pets Are Trained:

You can’t just have pets running around the office. Not only will they create a mess, but it could turn into disaster if they get in someone’s way. That’s why pets need to be trained before they are allowed at work. They not only need to respond to simple commands, but they also need to be well socialized so that they don’t be aggressive with other pets or employees. You also need to make sure they’re not shy and uncomfortable. They should be happy as well as you.

  1. Have a Safe Environment:

A safe workspace is important for having pets in it. It needs to be big enough so they have plenty of space to walk around in, and that they don’t get in the way of anyone else. It also needs to be clean so that pets don’t accidently eat something or step on something sharp. If you’re bringing a pet, be a good sport and clean up after yourselves. If you have computers or any other electronic device, make sure the floors and walls are clear of wires. This will ensure that cheeky ones don’t chew on them, and that they don’t trip over or become caught.

  1. Does Your Pet Need a Sickie?

Employees should stay home if they’re sick so they don’t spread germs at work. The same goes for pets. Before you can bring them in, take them to the Vet to make sure they’re healthy and sick free. They can’t be spreading germs to any other pets! Also, make sure they have the necessary vaccinations so they’re not likely to catch any illnesses. They may not like getting a shot, but the sooner it’s over and done with, the sooner they can come to work and make everybody happy!
