Creative Ways To Keep Your Pet Cool In Summer

posted by The Daily Fluff December 6, 2016 0 comments

One of the greatest challenges in summer is keeping cool. For pet owners this gets even more difficult, especially if you’re not always home! With some help from our furry contributors, we’ve come up with a few ideas to keep your pets cool over the warmer months.

Go for walks early or late:

Although this isn’t a way to keep cool, it’s a great way for your pooch to get exercise without packing on the extra heat! For an extra treat you could even have a pool set up when you get back!

Pooches Ollie and Oscar add:

This summer our plan to stay cool is simple, walks either early in the morning/later at night so we don’t burn our paw pads. We sometimes even have a puppy pool at home!

Ice – and lots of it!

For the cat owners, the two Birmans Lulu and Finn love the idea their mum has:

When the weather gets super hot, Mum helps cool us down by leaving a tea-towel-wrapped ice pack in our bed, and puts ice cubes in our water bowl.

This of course could translate to other pets too!

Frozen Treats:

Like humans, dogs would love to eat something frozen to help them cool down. You could give them flavoured ice blocks, add them to their water or freeze them in a “kong” toy. Ollie and Oscar love Pupsicles!

Frozen water and chicken stock in a container with treats and toys in there. Keeps us cool and busy for hours!

Hair Cut (not just for the fashion minded!)

You’d be surprised how much cooler animals are with less hair on them! For those of you with long hair, think of how much of a difference it makes on a hot day when you tie your hair up.

Every summer we get a fancy new (anaesthesia-free) haircut, to help lighten our layers when the weather starts to get warmer, say Lulu and Finn.

That’s right, even cats appreciate it in the end!

Air Conditioner Seat:

Move your dog or cat’s bed right in front of your air conditioner, or if you have a cat that loves to be on higher ground (they’re royalty, am I right?) move a high stool to a place right where the air hits. This idea might not be loved by all, as some might be too scared of the noise or moving air!

Easy DIY Ice Treats For Your Dog

posted by The Daily Fluff November 15, 2016 0 comments

Melbourne’s weather is (slowly) starting to heat up, and we’re all starting to get ready for the heat that looms in the months before us. Air conditioners are turned on and freezers are stocked up with ice-cold snacks and ice cubes to help us keep our body temperatures down. Although your pets may love to bask in the sun on a summer’s day, they would love an icy treat too! Follow our steps below to create a fun, simple and delicious DIY ice treat for your dog, or any other pet that’s willing to try!

What you need:

  • Ice cube tray or cupcake pans
  • Chicken broth or water
  • A packet of your dog’s favourite biscuits/treats

Note: The ingredients used can be switched out for pretty much any dog-safe ingredient that will freeze. You could add as many layers as you like—be creative!

Step 1:
Fill the ice cube tray or cupcake pan with the chicken broth or water.

Step 2:
Add the biscuit or treat. If it’s a smaller treat, add a few and let them sink to the bottom of the tray for a special surprise! If it’s long and solid, it will make a great edible doggy popsicle stick!

Step 3:
Carefully place the tray in the freezer for 1-2 hours or until solid.

Step 4:
Watch your dog’s face light up as you hand over a treat!
