Our Top 10 Animal Sidekicks

posted by The Daily Fluff June 28, 2018 0 comments

We all think that our pets are superheroes…they can run at lightning speed, make us happy when we’re sad, and have super senses when it comes to food! We’ve come up with a list of our top 10 favourite animal sidekicks from the big screen!

  1. Timon & Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Why have one sidekick when you can have two! Timon and Pumbaa are the ultimate sidekicks. They’re silly, wise-cracking and caring, and did we mention they sing two of the world’s greatest songs? ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’.

  1. Scooby-Doo

Scooby is one of the most iconic sidekicks in TV history. He’s Shaggy’s best pal and together they helped solve many mysteries…with many silly mistakes of course, and the help of a few scooby snacks along the way.

  1. Hedwig (Harry Potter)

Hedwig and Harry were the best of friends. She could manoeuvre windows and doorways to successfully deliver parcels (sorry Errol). But most notable of all, she sacrificed herself to save Harry…yep, we’re still recovering.

  1. Donkey (Shrek)

This waffle loving legend is just that…a legend. He sings, befriends almost everyone, and marries a fire breathing dragon. If that’s not the definition of a legend, we don’t know what is!

  1. Dug (Up)

He’s a talking dog! That’s not the main reason we love Dug but being able to communicate with man’s best friend is a definite pro! Dug is bubbly, loves squirrels and won’t take no for an answer – all signs of an excellent sidekick!

  1. Dory (Finding Nemo)

Anyone who can speak whale is a friend worth having if you ask us! Dory is a fun-loving, friendly, short term memory loss suffering fish – what’s not to love? She also gave us some fabulous life-long advice when she said – “just keep swimming”.

  1. Maximus (Tangled)

The noblest horse of them all. Even though he doesn’t speak, Maximus is hilarious – like funniest horse in film history funny. He has impeccable tracking skills, the nose of a sniffer dog and is as noble as noble can be.

  1. Marcel (Friends)

Oh Marcel, where do we begin? Ross adored his capuchin monkey Marcel. After authorities learnt that he was an illegal exotic animal, a chase to find and capture Marcel took place. He ended up in a zoo and then later on ended up a famous movie star monkey!

  1. Slinky (Toy Story)

This little dachshund is truly an asset to our old friends Buzz and Woody. Without Slinky’s exceptional flexibility, the Toy Story gang would be spread far and wide! Go Slinky!

  1. Garfield

Garfield, the orange, fuzzy tabby cat is all of our heroes. He hates Mondays, loves coffee and adores lasagna…can you get a more relatable sidekick?! Did you know that Garfield has been around for 40 years? Crazy right!

How did we go with our top 10 animal sidekicks? Is there any that you think we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments below!

3 DIY Tips To Look After Your Pet On A Hot Summer’s Day

posted by The Daily Fluff January 2, 2018 0 comments

The summer heat can be pretty uncomfortable for humans. But think how much more uncomfortable it is for our furry little friends. They are sweltering under all that fur and hair, so it is very easy for them to become over heated and dehydrated. That’s where you come in!

If you are struggling to come up with ways to keep your pet cool, that’s not a problem! Here are some creative ways you can keep your pet cool over the summer!

  1. Water Park:

Your dog (or fearless feline) will love splashing around your back yard in their very own water park! Simply visit your local store and purchase a kid-sized pool to fill water in. Your pet will run around like a maniac without feeling worn out! Even if they don’t like water much, you can splash water on them to help them cool down. Or if you prefer, grab out your hose and give them a nice, relaxing shower. If you have a sprinkler, pull it out and connect it up so that your crazy caper can run around through the water!

  1. Ice Treats:

This easy, fun and, yes, even yummy idea will have your pet rolling over with delight! Nice, cold ice treats are great for being so effective and you can use them again and again! There are plenty of ways you can give ice treats to your pet. Grab some small ice blocks out of your fridge and scatter them across the floor. Your pet will love chasing them around the house while keeping them cool at the same time. If your pet loves sweet treats, look up the many easy-to-follow recipes online, from fruit flavoured snacks to doggie ice-cream!

  1. Give Them Shade:

If your pet likes to be outside, whether they run around or have a nice nap, then they will definitely get hot quick. Shade will not only help them stay out of the blistering sun and becoming overheated, but they’ll be protected from hot concrete that can damage their paws. If you have an outdoor umbrella, pop it up and have your pet sprawl out underneath with a chilled bowl of water. If you don’t have an outdoor umbrella, pop up some smaller ones and place them on the ground or in flower pots so your pet can be protected wherever they go. Or you can pop up a tent and your pet can go on camping without leaving their back yard!

These DIY methods are so easy to follow that you won’t have to worry about your pet being overheated. They will be the coolest pet around!

8 Signs Your Pet Loves You

posted by The Daily Fluff December 31, 2017 0 comments

Ever wonder what your pet really thinks about you or if they are just using you for food? We pour so much love into our four-legged best friend. While they can’t say ‘I love you’ there are other, sometimes bizarre, ways in which they show their affection.

In preparation for Valentine’s Day here is a list of the many ways our pets show their love:

  1. They bring you ‘presents’:

Although not what you’d normally put on your wish list, it is always the thought that counts. Cats are natural predators, so in leaving the odd dead mouse or bird for you, they are either teaching you how to hunt or showing off their abilities. Either way it’s a loving gesture.

Dog’s bred for hunting will do this as well as it also shows they are a top dog!

  1. Snuggles:

If your dog likes to sleep in your bed and cuddle with you then it is a big sign that they like you. Especially after feeding time or in the morning when their motives aren’t food related.

Cats like warm and safe places to sleep, that is mostly your lap and sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, your head.

  1. Tail wagging:

Body language is an excellent way of reading your pet’s mood. When a dog is wagging their tail or their ears are lifted it is safe to say your pup is happy that you are around.

The tail is also a useful tool for reading cats. The word is if a cat’s tail is up and twitches a little that cat is sending off friendly vibes.

  1. Hanging out and following you:

If you’ve ever wondered why your pet follows you around the house or waits for you outside the bathroom, it’s simply because they enjoy your company. Dogs are pack animals and love being around family.

While cats are notoriously independent they are not above seeking company as well.

  1. Eye contact and kitty winks:

Did you know that when your cute kitty winks at you or squints they are saying ‘you’re alright?!’ It’s like a stamp of approval that shows that they trust you.

Dogs are less complicated. Sometimes all you need to do is make brief eye contact with a pooch and they are bounding over to you with a goofy look on their face.

  1. Showing their belly:

When cats show their belly to you it is a sign that they trust you. If you’ve ever had a cat scratch you when giving their tum a little rub they say it’s because it’s a breach of their trust.

On the other hand, most dogs love having their belly scratched. A dog rolls over as a sign of trust as well, but they may just want to scratch a place they can’t reach.

  1. Playing:

Playing catch or tug-of-war with your pup is a good way to strengthen your bond. There’s no harm in a bit of roughhousing as well if it doesn’t go too far. It shows that your dog likes having fun with you!

But it’s not just dogs! Cat’s love playing with their owners as well! A curled tail usually means they are in a playful mood so it’s time to bring out the toys!

  1. The big welcome home:

It’s one of the more obvious signs when you come home and your furry best friend is nearly knocking over furniture in their excitement to see you. They may spring down the hall, rub against your legs, and then pretend they never cared you left.

6 Things Your Cat Needs For The Perfect Life

posted by The Daily Fluff January 30, 2017 0 comments

Do you have a cat? Do you love them to bits? Do you want them to have the (purr)fect life? You’ve come to the right place! Cats need lots of love and attention so that they can return the favour. Here’s a list of all the things your cat needs to have the perfect life!

Here’s a list of all the things your cat needs to have the perfect life!

  1. A Healthy Diet:

Your cats need to be well fed so they can become big and strong. However, it’s important to know what they should eat. A healthy diet for your cat provides strong muscles, soft fur, fresh teeth and a suitable weight. Different meals work for different cats, so check with your vet what your cat should be eating and how much.

  1. A Comfy Bed:

It’s a well-known fact that cats sleep more than humans. They sleep about 16-20 hours a day, something that we’re envious of. Nevertheless, because they sleep so much, your kitty needs a fresh and comfy bed. It has to be the right size, and it has to been cleaned regularly so they don’t sleep in their own loose fur. It’s also important that they’re cleaned regularly for health benefits, both ours and our cats. This can be done with vacuums, brushes, or in the washing machine (check if the bed is suitable). Your cat will have the best beauty sleep ever!

  1. A Bunch of Toys:

Kitties are a playful bunch, so they’ll need some toys to play with. You can buy some toys from your local pet store, such as balls and fake mice. However, you can also make your own toys! Grab some loose string from around the house and have your cat chase it around. Or get some tin foil and roll it up into a ball for you cat to skid around your floors.

  1. A Sunny Day:

Cats need their daily dose of vitamin D as much as we do. When you’re heading out for the day, let you cat outside so that they can run around or take a nap beneath the trees. Some cats can be indoor ones, so give them a small handful of biscuits to lure them out. Your cat needs to be suitable to go outside too. Make sure that they’re not likely to get into fights or run away. You don’t want anything to happen to your little ball of fur!

  1. Plenty of Grooming:

When your cat goes outside, their fur is likely to get covered with leaves, dirt and sticks. Smooth their fur down with a good brush. Have their fur soft and shiny with a regular brushing session. It will reduce the likeliness of fleas and tics as well. Your cat may not like their knots getting brushed out, and they may bite or scratch you. This is a good opportunity to clip their nails. That way their nails are healthy, and they won’t be as sharp if they should scratch you. If you’re skittish about your cat scratching you, your Vet or local pet groomer will be happy to do it for you.

  1. A Bowl of Water:

Last, but certainly not least, a well-hydrated kitty is a happy kitty. Your cat will need a big bowl of water to drink throughout the day. Sorry, they need SEVERAL bowls of water. Have one next to where your cat eats and sleeps, and a couple outside, in the front and back yard. Especially during the warmer months, your kitty will likely get hot and bothered quickly. After all, they are wearing a fur coat that they can’t take off. Make sure that the bowls are clean and that they’re full. Your cat will gulp down that water fast.

Your cat will have the best owner ever with all these things you can provide for them. Be prepared for lots of cuddles as a reward!

3 Fun Ways to Spend Summer With Your Pet in Melbourne

posted by The Daily Fluff January 23, 2017 0 comments

Stuck in a weekend rut? Sometimes going to the beach again and again can get a bit repetitive. In order to fully enjoy summer, you and your pup should try new things. And luckily for you, Melbourne has a wide range of pet friendly activities for you two to enjoy together.

We’ve come up with a few suggestions so that you and your pet can have the best summer ever!

  1. Visit a café:

Melbourne is well known for its buzzing cafes. If you think you can’t enjoy them with your pooch, think again! There are many cafes around town that caters to both you and your pet. The Stray Dog Café in Glen Waverley not only offers hand made burgers, but they will give your dog a free bowl of chicken for them to nom on. The Farm Café in Abbotsford has delicious treats and rustic views of the children’s farm. Your dog will feel right at home! Crowded House in Williamstown offers your pooch a bowl of water after they’ve had a big day of running around the nearby beaches. Kew Nursery and Café not only have gardening supplies for your shopping enjoyment, but it has a lovely garden scene for you and your pet to enjoy. If it’s a hot day, head to the dog specialty café, Dog House! Not only do they have a wide range of ice creams, but they also have plenty of yummy treats for your dog, such as meat muffins, bones and steaks!

  1. Go the movies:

Who says you can’t bring your pet to the movies? Summer is the perfect time to attend outdoor cinemas, where you can watch the latest releases and good old classics. And guess what? Your pet can come along too! QV Outdoor Cinema has pet friendly cinema sessions up until February where you can cuddle up to your pooch while watching a flick in the city. The sessions also raise money for Lort Smith, Australia’s not-for-profit animal hospital.

Biggie Smalls loves heading to the QV outdoor cinema with his parents!

I’m a movies man so I love sitting back on a deck chair and relaxing under the stars at QV doggy and deck chair movie nights. I can eat snacks and nap too.

However, if you prefer for you and your pup to get back to nature, Moonlight Cinema in the Botanical Gardens is also pet friendly. Running until April, you and your pet can lie out on the grass among the trees and watch a movie under the stars. There is also the drive-in cinema in Coburg, where you two can cuddle up in the comfort of your own car!

  1. Attend a food truck festival:

Do you and your pooch want to eat some yummy nibbles while having fun at the same time? Summer in Melbourne has you covered! There are plenty of food truck festivals happening that not only offers mouth-watering food and beverages, but they also allow you to bring your best friend! The Coburg Velodrome Food Truck Festival starts it all off on Australia Day, running until the 29th. It has it all: food trucks, circus performers, live music, wrestling rings and outdoor cinemas. They also run daily food-eating competitions, not only for humans, but for dogs too! Your little winner can show it’s competitive side and eat as many snags as they can in three minutes. Don’t worry; there will be a vet on side to make sure they don’t stuff themselves silly. There is also the Food Truck Park in Preston that runs annual festivals with a wide variety of themes such as BBQ and beers, tacos, Indian street food and pizza. Plus, your pet can come along to mingle with other pups and make new friends!

Need some more great ideas? Here are some of our contributor’s favourite ways to spend summer in Melbourne!

One of my favourite spots to go in Melbourne on a warm summers day is Warrandyte River. Always plenty of pups for me to play with, lots of shade for mum (and for me) to laze around in, and endless water for to splash in! Perfect day if you ask me! – Bentley

Bentley’s not the only one who loves to splash around in the water!

The beach is the best! I love swimming and then rolling in the sand. Digging holes and chasing my brother through the dunes. It’s perfect on a hot day to cool off!! – Lil Kim

Puppy Play Date 101

posted by The Daily Fluff January 23, 2017 0 comments

It’s important for your pup to make new friends. It increases their socialisation skills and helps them stay calm and friendly around others. However, your dog can also help you socialise at the same time!

Looking for new friends? Look no further! Puppy play dates can be beneficial for both pup and owner.

If you’ve never had or been on a puppy play date before, here are a few ways you two can be ready before the big date!

Obedience Classes:

If you have an adorable little puppy, they’re most likely to be rambunctious, wild and looking for fun. Some obedience classes will be needed to ensure that they are well trained so that they behave on their date. You can take this opportunity for you two to make new friends. If you’re both new, talk to some other owners and ask for tips on how to better train your dog. If you two have been attending for a while, give some tips to some new owners. Also make sure your pup is socialising as well. Slowly allow them to meet other dogs that are the same size as them so that they don’t get intimidated easily. Once they’re used to meeting new friends, they’ll be able to approach anyone with friendliness and discipline.

Go for a walk:

An easy way to make new friends, especially once your pooch is well trained, is to take them for a walk. This is a great way for your dog to be exposed to breeds of all shapes and sizes in your neighbourhood. Once they’re comfortable meeting new dogs, you can take them to the local dog park where they can run and make new friends. At the same time, you can strike up a conversation with local dog owners. Laugh along together when the dogs do something cute or funny. Ask them any questions you have about raising your pet. Talk about a recent movie you saw. The conversation topics are endless!

Join a Playgroup:

There are plenty of playgroups around where you and your dog can make new friends. Google a local group that benefits both you and your pooch. Once you find one, head on down and make some new friends! Depending on your dog’s breed, joining a playgroup that caters to a certain breed may be beneficial for your pup. Especially if your pup is small, having them around the same breed or other small dogs may help them be less intimidated than if they were around bigger ones. Once they’ve settled in, strike up a conversation with other members about how your dogs are the best pets ever!

The Play Date:

Once you and your pup have made new friends, you can organise a play date! Make sure it’s at a home that’s safe and large so they have plenty of room to run around and have some fun! Also make sure that your dog is comfortable around new people and environments. You don’t want any accidents to happen if they’re shy! Set your pups up in a backyard with their new furry friends and sit down, relax and have a coffee! Just be sure you keep a watchful eye on the little ones.

Fun Ways to Celebrate Australia Day With Your Pet

posted by The Daily Fluff January 17, 2017 0 comments

Australia Day is quickly approaching and it’s time to start thinking about how to celebrate. Of course, you can’t leave your pet out of your plans!

Australia Day is all about spending time with your mates, and who is a better mate than your furry little friend? If you’re stuck on ideas on how to get them involved, look no further, here are 3 fun ways you and your pet can celebrate together!

Read on for our favourite ideas:

Visit a bar/pub:

Australia Day isn’t Australia Day without good foods and drinks. Luckily, there are many bars and pubs around that are pet friendly and are open on Australia Day. There’s Madam Brussels in the CBD, where you can enjoy a cocktail and sweet treats while your pooch can lie on the turf. Republica in St Kilda offers live music with a scenic beach view that you two can stroll along afterwards. Pubs such as the College Lawn Hotel in Prahran and The Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy are offering Australia Day events that have food eating competitions, live music, Triple J Hottest 100 countdowns, and, of course, a place for your pet. If you’re looking for entertainment as well, the Coburg Velodrome Food Truck Festival not only offers food trucks, an outdoor cinema, live music, eating competitions and circus performers, but it’s also pet friendly!

Have a BBQ:

Prefer to stay at home? Why not invite your friends and family over to host a BBQ where your pet is the guest of honour? Instead of stressing over where to go where your pet is allowed, get some drinks, throw some good old shrimp on the barbie, play some music on the stereo, and grab a bowl for your pet to enjoy a delicious treat. If your friends and family have pets of their own, invite them over. The more furry friends, the merrier! Plus, your pet will be able to socialise while you do the same. Just make sure that they’re not having too much fun. You don’t want burger patties flying everywhere while the pups run around. If your backyard is not big enough for them to run around in, you can always organize a BBQ at your local dog friendly park.

Take a trip:

Victoria is full of fun and adventurous day trips for you and your dog to enjoy together. Grab your sunnies and drive down to one of the many dog friendly beaches around Victoria like Brighton Dog Beach, Altona Beach, Safety Beach and Port Fairy, and that’s only a small amount! Or maybe this is the opportunity to go on that walk your pet keeps bugging you about. Spend the day together in the Yarra Valley and take a scenic stroll in Maroondah Reservoir Park. Or if you prefer beach views, head to the Great Ocean Road and journey through the Bay of Islands National Park. Wherever you go, there are bound to be plenty of dog friendly cafes that’ll give you two a well-deserved rest once you’re done with your big day.

Australia Day shouldn’t keep you from celebrating with your best friend. In fact, it is the perfect time for it. So get planning, because you have a big day ahead of the two of you!

7 Simple Toys We Guarantee Your Fussy Cat Will Love

posted by The Daily Fluff December 16, 2016 0 comments

Cat owners; a common term used to refer to the human slaves that live to please, serve and give gifts to cats.

However, these cat recipients are often displeased with these gifts, and opt for the items that aren’t toys, shouldn’t be toys and probably never will be advertised as toys.

So in order to save money and stop wasting your time browsing pet stores looking for the perfect cat toy that doesn’t exist, we have compiled a list of simple “toys” that your royal, egotistical kitty should love, at least for a little bit. Because let’s face it, even if the perfect toy did exist your cat would probably decide it hates it!

Scrunched up… anything:

To cats scrunched up materials are super humorous. Whether it’s the noise, shape or texture we don’t know, but they sure do love it! Scrunch up paper or tin foil and watch your cat have a ball (literally).

In my mind nothing beats some tin foil screwed up tightly into a ball. It’s light, and perfect to push around the place. Many expensive toys have been forgotten about when the foil ball comes out! Says Freddie Mercury the British Shorthair.

Their tail:

This one might not work on every cat, but we guarantee some will fall for it. When your cat is lying down wiggle its tail and watch the amusing events that follow. Your cat may be determined to win against the fluffy beast before it.

Pencils & Drinking Straws:

Pencils and straws work a treat as toys. Hold one end and tap it around your cat until you earn his/her attention. Be sure to supervise so they don’t get eaten!

A Box:

Ollie says,

Nothing beats a cardboard box for fun times!

A simple toy that can keep your cat amused for hours—with or without your participation. If you’re feeling creative and want to step it up a notch, cut holes in the box and poke a pencil in and out of the holes whilst your cat tries to catch it.

An Empty Sticky Tape Roll:

Once your sticky tape roll is empty, give it to your cat! They’re sturdy, roll and are the perfect size for your cat to play with.

Hair Ties:

Stretchy, amusing and they can fly! There’s bound to be at least one hair tie in every household and due to this they make a simple but effective cat toy. Throw or flick it for your cat to chase. Some may even figure out how to stretch it back and flick it themselves!

Laser Pen:

An all-time favourite that can keep them busy for hours. Point it at walls, along the ground and back again to help your cat get active. Ensure you NEVER point it at your cat’s face or anyone else’s. They can be harmful so we recommend only using a very low-grade laser light.

I love a laser pen. Chasing red dots is the best! – Bruno the Burmese

Signs You’re The Best ‘Purr-ent’

posted by The Daily Fluff November 15, 2016 0 comments

Here at The Daily Fluff, we like to treat our pets as if they are a part of our family! Whether you like to pamper your pet with their favourite treats, or just love and affection, you know that no matter what, to them you’re the best human in the world.

Here’s a list of reasons The Daily Fluff thinks you’re the best ‘purr-ent’ out there!

You look after their health:

Like us, our pets probably aren’t feeling their best without yummy, nutritious food and some exercise! Trust us, your dog thinks you’re the best person on earth when you grab their favourite ball and have a game of catch. Keeping your pets active, keeps them happy!

When it comes to their physical health, you know what’s best, that’s why you take them to the vet, regardless of how much they don’t want to go!

You show them affection:

It’s important to show your fur babies how much you really love them. Set aside some time every day to pamper your cat or dog with love and affection. Whether this is some quality belly rub time, or just some cuddles, this fosters an emotional connection between you and your pet, and it shows them that you love them as much as they love you!

You let them hang out with their friends:

Socialisation is so important for pups! If your dog is an only (fur)child, make sure that every now and then you take them out to a dog park so they can interact with other dogs. Not only will your pup love making new friends, it will teach them important lessons.

They get super-dooper excited to see you:

You know your pet really loves you when they get excited every single time you walk back through the front door. There is nothing nicer then being greeted with pure happiness everyday when you get home! Whether your dog runs around in circles, or your cat rubs against your legs, this their way of showing you that they are glad to see you.

They treat you like you’re part of the pack:

This is how you know your pet truly believes you’re the best parent out there!

It’s natural for animals to cuddle up when they’re having naps, so this is why they might try and sneak into your bedroom in the middle of the night.

If they’re feeling playful, they might even try and give you a sneaky love-bite! If they give you a little nibble on the chin, or on your fingers, they are trying to tell you that they love being in your pack, and that you’re the ultimate purrent!

Our Insta-friend Bentley said

My mum is the best purrent because when she comes home from work after leaving me by myself all day she makes up for it with endless cuddles and kisses! She also puts up with my fussy eating habits and doesn’t get angry when I don’t eat my food!

How does your pet show you they love you? Leave us a comment down below!

Easy DIY Ice Treats For Your Dog

posted by The Daily Fluff November 15, 2016 0 comments

Melbourne’s weather is (slowly) starting to heat up, and we’re all starting to get ready for the heat that looms in the months before us. Air conditioners are turned on and freezers are stocked up with ice-cold snacks and ice cubes to help us keep our body temperatures down. Although your pets may love to bask in the sun on a summer’s day, they would love an icy treat too! Follow our steps below to create a fun, simple and delicious DIY ice treat for your dog, or any other pet that’s willing to try!

What you need:

  • Ice cube tray or cupcake pans
  • Chicken broth or water
  • A packet of your dog’s favourite biscuits/treats

Note: The ingredients used can be switched out for pretty much any dog-safe ingredient that will freeze. You could add as many layers as you like—be creative!

Step 1:
Fill the ice cube tray or cupcake pan with the chicken broth or water.

Step 2:
Add the biscuit or treat. If it’s a smaller treat, add a few and let them sink to the bottom of the tray for a special surprise! If it’s long and solid, it will make a great edible doggy popsicle stick!

Step 3:
Carefully place the tray in the freezer for 1-2 hours or until solid.

Step 4:
Watch your dog’s face light up as you hand over a treat!

Are you going to make these delicious dog ice treats? Or do you have a favourite recipe you’d love to share with us? Comment below!
