Great Places In Melbourne To Get Active With Your Pets

There’s no other motivator in our lives greater than our dogs—well most dogs anyway! They love to run around, meet other pooches and explore the outdoors with their humans by their side.

Stuck deciding where to take your dog in these warmer months for some sunshine and a run around? We’ve compiled a list of some great places to get active with your pets in Melbourne.

Mathias Track:

Mathias track in the Dandenongs is a 3.5 km track to Silvan Road. It’s known for its ease to walk, as well as being dog, horse and mountain bike friendly!

Australian Shepherds Ziggy and Noodle love Mathias track, and say,

Us dogs have to be on leads, but it’s so pretty, who minds!

Saint Kilda Dog Beach:

Beach days are one of the best things about the warmer months, and the only thing that makes the trip better is when you can take your dog! There are different areas of Saint Kilda beach that allow dogs off leash, with lots of room for everyone to enjoy bonding at the beach with their pooch.

My favourite place to get active with mum in Melbourne would definitely be the Saint Kilda Dog Beach! Swimming is one of my favourite things to do and what a better way to do it than with lots of other doggie friends! Then a quick roll around in the sand of course, just to make the car extra dirty for mum on the way home. – Bentley the Newfoundland

Clayton Reserve:

Clayton Reserve, a dog park in Melbourne, is an off leash area for dogs, which is fenced off so you know your pooch is secure whilst exercising. The reserve is well known for its congregation of both social humans and dogs!

The Briars (Mount Martha):

If you’re visiting the Mornington Peninsula, within the Briars is “a large off leash area that is fenced off. There is a 2km track around and through the bush lands, perfect for us dogs to romp,” say Ziggy and Noodle!


Albert Park:

Despite the few excluded areas, most of the 226 hectare Albert Park permits dogs on leash, with a few sections allowing dogs to be off leash. This is a great way to get active with your pet and get them socialised with other pooches!

Coastal Track – Hampton and Black Rock:

Ziggy and Noodle also love the coastal track between Hampton and black rock! They say:

It’s close to good cafes for coffee for the human, and you can plan it to end at Sandringham Dog Beach for a swim!

What a great way to get some exercise, relax and cool down at the beach!

The Tan Track – Melbourne:

Miniature Dachshund siblings Biggie Smalls & Little Kim may only have three legs, but that doesn’t stop them from loving outdoor adventures! They say,

Every Saturday we run the Tan. It’s great because it’s got hills, slopes, grass and gravel! We like to race each other to see who is the fastest!

Yoga For Dogs

We all know what yoga is right? Thank the internet and the crazy pretzel­ shaped selfies of men and women world over for educating anyone who might not have heard of this ancient practice about how they can heal their bodies and lives through this mental and physical meditation.

Of course, these days yoga itself comes in a few different varieties, some perform it in classes in the centre of busy gyms, some prefer to stretch outdoors alone, some (like yours truly) meditate via the aid of a Youtube video yogi in their dressing gowns and pajama’s before hopping on the tram to work, and – some people now take their dogs along to yoga with them!

Of course, a four ­legged pooch can’t exactly stretch themselves out into a warrior, or butterfly pose. So, what exactly is Doga?

As it turns out, Doga is primarily a social experience for dogs and owners to bond. While there are some dog ­friendly poses, the main characteristic of Doga tends to be in creating a closer and more trusting relationship between dog and human. Many classes ask humans to stroke and massage their dogs, breathe with them and sometimes perform some light stretching. Other classes simply involve the dogs being there, present alongside other dogs and humans in a calm, friendly setting.

The idea makes sense, as many humans are already aware of the de-­stressing effects of having a pet or other friendly animal around. Dogs tend to detoxify any situation, and therefore are the perfect companion to bring along to a yoga class, provided they are not too over-excited and energetic!

How to do Doga/Get Your Dog Involved:

U.S Doga teacher Brenda Bryan has invented a few techniques for getting dogs involved and encouraging pet/owner bonding time. Most of Bryan’s techniques simply involve increasing the closeness between pets and owners and creating a more comfortable setting for the dogs. To get started with Doga you could try her Heart-­To-Hound Mudra, a meditation that connects you to your dog by placing one hand on your own heart and one hand on your dogs, then closing your eyes and breathing slowly.

All in all, Doga looks like a great way to have some fun and relax with your pooch. Why not try it out at home, or even email your local yogi to see if you could bring a little canine love to your after‐work yoga class!

4 Ways To Exercise With Your Dog ­

Even with today’s busy lifestyle­ it’s important for pets and owners alike to keep fit so they can tackle all their important daily tasks (like testing out those new chew toys dad brought home!) with a clear mind.

Here at the Daily Fluff we’ve compiled four ways to exercise with your dog this spring, that will clear that winter fog away and get you both outside, soaking up some healthy Vitamin D.

1. Walking or running:

Walking or running with your dog is one of the most common ways to get fit while bonding together.

Instagram celebs Sherman and Diesel are big fans of a good beach ­run, they love how it wears their owner out so they can relax afterwards:

“Hearing the word W.A.L.K is our favourite part of the day. We like to exercise our human at the local off-leash beach, Beaumaris Yacht Club. Look out for Diesel chasing his favourite purple ball and I will be rolling around in some seaweed. remember regular exercise is great for your humans and helps keep us happy and healthy too.”

2. Keepings off:

Dogs love ball sports. Head to the backyard or local park with a soccer ball and play keepings off! Gentle dribbling activities will work out both you and your dog, while you try to keep the ball away and your dog tries to catch it. This is also a good way for you to check in with your old sports skills and see if you’ve still got it!

3. Stand­-Up Paddle Boarding:

If you’ve always wanted to try paddle ­boarding but haven’t the heart to leave your pooch at home while you get to splash around in the ocean, there’s no need to worry! Dogs love water, waves and the ocean in general. Any pup that loves the feel of the wind in their face during the drive down to the beach will equally enjoy the sea­ spray as they get to ride the waves like Kate Winslet in the Titanic.

4. Bodysurfing:

As the weather warms up, the beaches fill up. Bodysurfing is a fun way to get fit and no equipment is necessary! Your dog can join in too and catch waves with you. Careful though, your pooch might show you up on the beach, either by riding those waves more smoothly, or attracting the attention of cute lifeguards!
