Benefits Of Pets In The Workplace

posted by The Daily Fluff October 10, 2016 0 comments

For most of us, the best thing about arriving home after work each day is being greeted by our furry friends. Playing catch or having some quality cuddle time is the best way to relax and de-stress after a long day at work.

However now you don’t have to spend your day wondering what mischief your pet is getting up to at home, or waiting for the clock to hit five so you can go home and spoil them with belly rubs anymore! Studies have shown that having pets in the workplace can actually be extremely beneficial!

Unconvinced? Here are the top benefits of having pets in the workplace:

Reduces stress and anxiety:

Anxiety is common in most workplaces. Even if you love your job, deadlines, meetings and time management can get to even the most zen of us!

Studies have shown that pet’s behaviour provokes laughter and entertainment, which is likely to reduce stress and feelings of depression. This is especially relieving in high-pressure corporate workplaces! Having something to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety is guaranteed to create a more productive and effective workplace.

Encourages physical activity:

Being stuck in the office, sitting down, sending emails all day definitely is not great for your health and wellbeing, that’s for sure. Even on the most beautiful summers days, we can feel obliged to stay inside while we’re at work.

Having pets in the office gives you the greatest excuse to get out and enjoy that sunshine! Leaving the office for even 15 minutes to walk the dog can be a great refresher and it can improve employee’s focus. Win/win!

Increases productivity:

Being happier, healthier, and less stressed at work can make a more productive team. Reduced stress in the workplace means that employees are less likely to take sick days and are more likely to enjoy their time at work.

Workplaces that are pet friendly have found that as office-pets create a more relaxed environment, they also boost creativity. Meaning that employees are more likely to be imaginative and productive.

If you’re seeking a bit more balance in your corporate life, we would definitely recommend asking your boss about introducing pet-friendly office days! Even if it’s just one day a week – like our friends at Jetpets, who have introduced Furbaby Friday at their workplace.

I mean, who can resist a puppies’ face anyway?!

6 Signs Your Dog Loves You

posted by The Daily Fluff October 10, 2016 0 comments

Everyone who knows you is very (VERY) aware that you love your dog. You most likely have photos plastered all over your wall of your dog, as well as screen savers, and think about your dog whilst at work. You possibly even dream of a land where only you and hundreds of clones of your dog exists—or is that taking it too far? Anyway, the point is, there is no doubt you love him or her, but how do you know that the special dog in your life loves you back?

They give you lots of kisses:

Your dog showers you with sloppy, smelly kisses. They kiss you when you wake up, before you go to sleep and every opportunity in between. Although it’s sometimes unwanted — like when you’re trying to get ready for a special occasion, and your hairy pooch decides it’s the perfect time to slobber all over your brand new outfit—it’s your dog’s way of saying “I love that you exist!”

They get excited when they see you (not matter how long it’s been):

Dog: “Mum, it’s been a whole day, I missed you so much!”
Also Dog: “Mum, I went outside to go to the toilet, I missed you so much!”
You know your dog loves you when they are CONSTANTLY greeting you like it’s been weeks.

Bentley says, “My favourite way to show how much I love my humans is whether they’ve been gone for 10 minutes, or 10 hours; making sure they’re absolutely smothered in kisses and cuddles from me the second they step in the door! (Whether they like it or not!)”

They can’t be upset with you:

Your fur child HATES the vet, HATES when you leave him/her and HATES baths. Despite this, 30 seconds later your dog will be in your arms begging to play. No matter how upset your dog may have been during unpleasant situations or whilst you were telling it off, it will forget about it straight away.

They want to be close to you:

Sometimes this means that sitting by your feet or next to you is not enough, and your dog will insist on sitting on your lap (even if they are 45 kilos)! Dogs are very loving, and contact is one of the main ways they express their affection!

Competes with others:

Your dog wants your undivided attention, and sometimes when your friends, partner or even other pets are around your dog gets extremely jealous that it’s not getting 100% of it. Occasionally the jealousy will result in a stare off and/or pushing its way between you and whatever is distracting you.

Pulls the ‘puppy dog eyes’ move ALL THE TIME:

We already mentioned evil stare offs, but puppy dog eyes are a whole new level because nine out of ten times you cave. Not only is this your dog’s favourite way to manipulate you, but it shows how badly your pooch wants to spend time with you!

Fun Ways to Celebrate Your Pet’s Birthday

posted by The Daily Fluff September 22, 2016 0 comments

All over the world, humans celebrate their birthdays. They receive presents wrapped with colourful paper and ribbons, eat their favourite meals, and sing around a chocolate cake. Little do they know their pets are watching from their beds with heavy hearts thinking, ‘what about my birthday, I’m seven and haven’t had one party!’ Or maybe they’re watching whilst thinking about how much they want that last slice of cake—either way, we’re sure they would love to celebrate their special day, too! If you’re short on ideas, below are our favourites to ensure your pet feels loved and overjoyed from celebrating.

Spend extra time with just you and your pet – no distractions:

Turn off the TV, put down your phone (unless you’re recording the event) and have some one-on-one time focusing on your pet. Not only will your pet feel grateful and special, but it will leave you feeling great for giving them the attention they deserve.

Ollie the kitty had his birthday celebrations recently! Here’s what he had to say: “It was my first birthday on the weekend, mumma pulled out allllll the stops and I had the bestest day ever! I got all the cuddles I wanted, plus a walk around the backyard on mum’s shoulder (for the first time ever) watching birdies up close! I was a good boy and didn’t try to catch them. I also got some cool new toys and heaps of playtime, and for dinner mum gave me 50g of smoked salmon all to myself! I also got heaps of sweet and thoughtful birthday greetings from my friends all over the world on Instagram, which made me feel really special.”

Do your pet’s favourite thing:

Whether it’s laying by a heater with cozy blankets, playing fetch outside, running through an open field or swimming at the beach, take time out of your day or weekend to do what your pet loves to do.

Organise a cake smash:

Yes, dog versions of a cake smash exist! They are such a unique and special way to capture your fur-baby doing something fun. Contact a pet photographer for more information.

Take a family photo:

Take a photo to remember the occasion. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just put your camera on timer and get into position. It’s a great family tradition you could start to commemorate your pet’s birthday. Put aside a photo album to add the yearly photo so you can see how everyone changes. Get the party hats out and make it fun!

Have a birthday party:

Invite your friends and their pets over for a birthday party! Bake special homemade pupcakes (and human cupcakes for you) and spend some time with everyone in your backyard or local park.

Give them treats:

Treat them with a few extra nibbles, or splurge on their favourite food for dinner! Food is the key to a lot of pet’s hearts.

Buy them new toys:

All pets love toys and let’s face it, their fluffy bear is getting extremely raggedy and old. Even wrap the presents up, as some pets may even find the wrapping paper the best gift of all! (Or if you’re a cat owner, the box that the gift came in will be their new favourite possession!)

Yoga For Dogs

posted by The Daily Fluff September 22, 2016 0 comments

We all know what yoga is right? Thank the internet and the crazy pretzel shaped selfies of men and women world over for educating anyone who might not have heard of this ancient practice about how they can heal their bodies and lives through this mental and physical meditation.

Of course, these days yoga itself comes in a few different varieties, some perform it in classes in the centre of busy gyms, some prefer to stretch outdoors alone, some (like yours truly) meditate via the aid of a Youtube video yogi in their dressing gowns and pajama’s before hopping on the tram to work, and – some people now take their dogs along to yoga with them!

Yoga | Doga | Exercise | How To Exercise With Pets | The Daily Fluff | Melbourne Pet BlogIt’s called Doga, and as it increases in popularity, fans are raving about it!

Of course, a four legged pooch can’t exactly stretch themselves out into a warrior, or butterfly pose. So, what exactly is Doga?

As it turns out, Doga is primarily a social experience for dogs and owners to bond. While there are some dog friendly poses, the main characteristic of Doga tends to be in creating a closer and more trusting relationship between dog and human. Many classes ask humans to stroke and massage their dogs, breathe with them and sometimes perform some light stretching. Other classes simply involve the dogs being there, present alongside other dogs and humans in a calm, friendly setting.

The idea makes sense, as many humans are already aware of the de-stressing effects of having a pet or other friendly animal around. Dogs tend to detoxify any situation, and therefore are the perfect companion to bring along to a yoga class, provided they are not too over-excited and energetic!

How to do Doga/Get Your Dog Involved:

U.S Doga teacher Brenda Bryan has invented a few techniques for getting dogs involved and encouraging pet/owner bonding time. Most of Bryan’s techniques simply involve increasing the closeness between pets and owners and creating a more comfortable setting for the dogs. To get started with Doga you could try her Heart-To-Hound Mudra, a meditation that connects you to your dog by placing one hand on your own heart and one hand on your dogs, then closing your eyes and breathing slowly.

All in all, Doga looks like a great way to have some fun and relax with your pooch. Why not try it out at home, or even email your local yogi to see if you could bring a little canine love to your after‐work yoga class!

Health Warning – Ticks

posted by The Daily Fluff September 15, 2016 0 comments

Pet owners are urged to keep an eye out for a potentially deadly tick which has found its way to Melbourne.

Find out more in the following clip by 7 News.

We spoke with Dr Andrea from Reservoir Vet Clinic to get her expert advice on the outbreak.

How can pet owners avoid their pet coming into contact with the Eastern Paralysis Tick?
Recent studies are showing that the Eastern Paralysis Tick is in metropolitan Melbourne- so using proven tick treatments such as Bravecto on dogs and Seresto on cats is going to help prevent tick paralysis – always follow the manufacturers instructions.
What are the symptoms of a tick bite that pet owners should look out for?
Unfortunately symptoms can vary a lot and can include, staggering, change of voice, vomiting, not able to eat properly, difficulty breathing,  difficulty walking or not wanting to walk.
If an owner suspects their pet has been bitten by a tick, what should they do?
It’s important to seek veterinary assistance immediately as paralysis tick is life threatening.

Five Fun Games to Play With Your Cat

posted by The Daily Fluff August 29, 2016 0 comments

If you’re a cat lover then you would know, each cat has its own unique personality, and there is no doubt that no two cats are the same. Here are some fun ideas to keep your cats entertained.

The Tech Cat

Who says cats can’t be tech nerds too? Google Play and Apple’s App stores are pretty much exploding with games for our feline friends. As long as you’ve got a smart-phone or a tablet, you’re ready to go.

Most games will let you determine what level your beloved kitty plays at, and as they advance the game will too!

To prevent any shattering disasters, and to protect your kitty’s claws, invest in a glass screen protector before you get started sharing your love for all things gadgets.

We love JitterBug and Cat Fishing.

The Traditional Cat

We all know that most cats are totally content just playing with feathers or a piece of string, and our Insta-famous friends Levi and Abby definitely agree.

“We see those feathers just waiting for us to pounce, I wonder who’ll get there first? Maybe we’ll go for that string just lying there taunting us instead… Mmmm, decisions decisions.  It’s such a hard life being a cat”

Aint that the truth.

luluThe No-Fuss Cat

We all know those cats who would be perfectly content going through life, simply entertaining themselves. They don’t need an iPad, or a box of toys to be entertained.

Our friend Freddy Mercury, like his namesake is known to be cheeky on occasions:

“One of my absolute favourite past times is to play hide-and-seek. I lurk behind doors and when an unsuspecting human passes I launch myself at them with a huge meow, paws outstretched. The reactions are priceless!”

Whether it’s feet under the table, or your hand under a blanket – these cats know how to keep themselves entertained on a budget.

freddyThe Adventurous Cat

For the super-energetic cat, your regular scratching post can be a bit of a bore. If you’re not willing to invest in one of those super OTT kitty jungle gyms, then make your own!

Gather together your cat’s favourite toys, tunnels and hiding spots and make them into their own personalised obstacle course. Hide treats inside their favourite toys, or use a string to lead them through the course.

This is a sure way to keep them entertained, and also tire those energetic kitties out!

If you’re looking for a kitty jungle gym then we recommend this one.

The Hungry Cat

In the wild, not every meal comes as easy as meowing at the bag of food until it magically appears in the bowl. Bring out those hunter-gatherer instincts in your furry friend and make dinnertime fun.

Try rolling dry food across the floor, hiding it around the house, or stuffing treat balls (like this one from My Pet Warehouse) with dry food. Why not make dinner time fun?

Famous Furry Friends

posted by The Daily Fluff August 29, 2016 0 comments

It’s no doubt that dogs, cats and all other types of animals are (wo)man’s best friend! Pet videos have been circulating the internet and pet pictures—and accounts— are taking over Instagram from loved-up pet owners. But what about animals that are in the public eye because of their celebrity-status owners?

Katy Perry

Small, fluffy, teddy bear-like animals make our hearts melt! The singer Katy Perry’s pooch appears to be a type of toy poodle. The golden pup is such a tiny, adorable package that we almost didn’t think it was real (but don’t worry, we saw videos)! The pooch’s name is Butters—almost as cute as the name of Katy’s cat; Kitty Purry.

Karl Lagerfeld

It seems fitting that fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld owns possibly the most fashionable cat on this planet. His striking Birman, Choupette, has her own maids, and from seeing her big blue eyes and gorgeous coat we have the idea that she could get away with anything! To top it off, Choupette has her own Instagram account so we can experience just how luxurious the cat’s life is. It’s acceptable to be jealous of a cat, right?

Hilary Swank

Actress Hilary Swank’s love for animals shines through her variety of pets; one including an African Grey Parrot – Dr. Seuss. The name is very fitting, as not only did Dr. Seuss have a lot to say in his books, but so do African Greys, being known as one of the greatest ‘speaking’ and most intelligent parrots. The magnificent bird can have a lifespan of around 50 years, and what it lacks in bright colouring it makes up in its large size.

Tom Hawkins

The Geelong AFL star has a sweet-faced pug cross Aussie bulldog—Oscar John Hawkins. Oscar’s small stature, pug colouring and piercing dark eyes are completed by an under bite that radiates the expression “I didn’t do it!” Head over to Oscar’s very own Instagram page to see him defend his territory from a vicious, robotic vacuum cleaner.

Peter Alexander

Peter Alexander—an Australian sleepwear brand—is named after its animal loving designer. If you’re a Peter Alexander fan you would already be aware of Peter’s love for all things animals. Peter’s past pet Penelope—who’s now in animal heaven—is the brand mascot, with the sausage dog plastered on the brand’s shopping bags, pyjamas and dog toys. Peter now has three adorable dogs; Betty the dachshund, Butch the dachshund cross, and a (recently rescued) cattle dog staffy mix, Kooper.

How to choose the right pet: 6 questions to ask yourself

posted by The Daily Fluff July 3, 2016 0 comments

Adding a new member to your home can be exciting but also overwhelming, as they are life-long commitments, and therefore the decision should not be taken lightly.

There is a lot of information on buying a pet, so we have narrowed it down to the six most important questions you must consider.

Have you worked out costs?
Pet ownership means paying for food, vet bills and other necessities for your animals. Not only do you have to consider short term costs such as desexing, but the long term costs such as regular immunisations and unexpected vet visits.

Is your house pet friendly?
Not only does this mean gaining approval from your land lord if renting, but it also means having adequate fencing and shelter for outdoor animals, and safe areas both inside and outside your house. The small details such as having holes in your decking are vital to consider for your pet’s safety.

Will you be travelling?
If you are a regular traveler—or even if you have one holiday approaching—you need to consider the practicality of getting a pet. If you are going away next month for three weeks, perhaps delay getting a pet until you get back. If you travel for a few days every month and have your heart set on a higher maintenance animal—unlike an aquarium—you need to make plans for someone to look after them while you are away.

What animal suits you?
Although an energetic Border Collie may not suit your Melbourne-city based apartment, inside lap-cats may be perfect for you! Think about what would suit your lifestyle, location and free time, as well as the animal’s needs. If you are unsure, you can always ask a friend or family member whether you can pet-sit so you can gain an understanding of what their pet care entails.

Have you researched the breed/pet and do you understand their special requirements?
There may be breed or animal specific characteristics that you must know and understand, so it is always wise to do your research before making your final choice. This could include details such as ponies not being able to see thin wire, or pugs and some other breeds of dogs always needing supervision in higher temperatures.

Have you considered adoption?
If you contact shelters or rescue groups and adopt an animal, you will be giving those in need a second chance at a forever home. If you have already picked the type of pet and particular breed you want, there are even breed specific rescue groups you can contact.
