Visit a bar/pub:
Australia Day isn’t Australia Day without good foods and drinks. Luckily, there are many bars and pubs around that are pet friendly and are open on Australia Day. There’s Madam Brussels in the CBD, where you can enjoy a cocktail and sweet treats while your pooch can lie on the turf. Republica in St Kilda offers live music with a scenic beach view that you two can stroll along afterwards. Pubs such as the College Lawn Hotel in Prahran and The Rainbow Hotel in Fitzroy are offering Australia Day events that have food eating competitions, live music, Triple J Hottest 100 countdowns, and, of course, a place for your pet. If you’re looking for entertainment as well, the Coburg Velodrome Food Truck Festival not only offers food trucks, an outdoor cinema, live music, eating competitions and circus performers, but it’s also pet friendly!
Have a BBQ:
Prefer to stay at home? Why not invite your friends and family over to host a BBQ where your pet is the guest of honour? Instead of stressing over where to go where your pet is allowed, get some drinks, throw some good old shrimp on the barbie, play some music on the stereo, and grab a bowl for your pet to enjoy a delicious treat. If your friends and family have pets of their own, invite them over. The more furry friends, the merrier! Plus, your pet will be able to socialise while you do the same. Just make sure that they’re not having too much fun. You don’t want burger patties flying everywhere while the pups run around. If your backyard is not big enough for them to run around in, you can always organize a BBQ at your local dog friendly park.
Take a trip:
Victoria is full of fun and adventurous day trips for you and your dog to enjoy together. Grab your sunnies and drive down to one of the many dog friendly beaches around Victoria like Brighton Dog Beach, Altona Beach, Safety Beach and Port Fairy, and that’s only a small amount! Or maybe this is the opportunity to go on that walk your pet keeps bugging you about. Spend the day together in the Yarra Valley and take a scenic stroll in Maroondah Reservoir Park. Or if you prefer beach views, head to the Great Ocean Road and journey through the Bay of Islands National Park. Wherever you go, there are bound to be plenty of dog friendly cafes that’ll give you two a well-deserved rest once you’re done with your big day.
Australia Day shouldn’t keep you from celebrating with your best friend. In fact, it is the perfect time for it. So get planning, because you have a big day ahead of the two of you!
