Our Top 10 Animal Sidekicks

posted by The Daily Fluff June 28, 2018 0 comments

We all think that our pets are superheroes…they can run at lightning speed, make us happy when we’re sad, and have super senses when it comes to food! We’ve come up with a list of our top 10 favourite animal sidekicks from the big screen!

  1. Timon & Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Why have one sidekick when you can have two! Timon and Pumbaa are the ultimate sidekicks. They’re silly, wise-cracking and caring, and did we mention they sing two of the world’s greatest songs? ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Can You Feel The Love Tonight’.

  1. Scooby-Doo

Scooby is one of the most iconic sidekicks in TV history. He’s Shaggy’s best pal and together they helped solve many mysteries…with many silly mistakes of course, and the help of a few scooby snacks along the way.

  1. Hedwig (Harry Potter)

Hedwig and Harry were the best of friends. She could manoeuvre windows and doorways to successfully deliver parcels (sorry Errol). But most notable of all, she sacrificed herself to save Harry…yep, we’re still recovering.

  1. Donkey (Shrek)

This waffle loving legend is just that…a legend. He sings, befriends almost everyone, and marries a fire breathing dragon. If that’s not the definition of a legend, we don’t know what is!

  1. Dug (Up)

He’s a talking dog! That’s not the main reason we love Dug but being able to communicate with man’s best friend is a definite pro! Dug is bubbly, loves squirrels and won’t take no for an answer – all signs of an excellent sidekick!

  1. Dory (Finding Nemo)

Anyone who can speak whale is a friend worth having if you ask us! Dory is a fun-loving, friendly, short term memory loss suffering fish – what’s not to love? She also gave us some fabulous life-long advice when she said – “just keep swimming”.

  1. Maximus (Tangled)

The noblest horse of them all. Even though he doesn’t speak, Maximus is hilarious – like funniest horse in film history funny. He has impeccable tracking skills, the nose of a sniffer dog and is as noble as noble can be.

  1. Marcel (Friends)

Oh Marcel, where do we begin? Ross adored his capuchin monkey Marcel. After authorities learnt that he was an illegal exotic animal, a chase to find and capture Marcel took place. He ended up in a zoo and then later on ended up a famous movie star monkey!

  1. Slinky (Toy Story)

This little dachshund is truly an asset to our old friends Buzz and Woody. Without Slinky’s exceptional flexibility, the Toy Story gang would be spread far and wide! Go Slinky!

  1. Garfield

Garfield, the orange, fuzzy tabby cat is all of our heroes. He hates Mondays, loves coffee and adores lasagna…can you get a more relatable sidekick?! Did you know that Garfield has been around for 40 years? Crazy right!

How did we go with our top 10 animal sidekicks? Is there any that you think we’ve missed? Let us know in the comments below!

8 Signs Your Pet Loves You

posted by The Daily Fluff December 31, 2017 0 comments

Ever wonder what your pet really thinks about you or if they are just using you for food? We pour so much love into our four-legged best friend. While they can’t say ‘I love you’ there are other, sometimes bizarre, ways in which they show their affection.

In preparation for Valentine’s Day here is a list of the many ways our pets show their love:

  1. They bring you ‘presents’:

Although not what you’d normally put on your wish list, it is always the thought that counts. Cats are natural predators, so in leaving the odd dead mouse or bird for you, they are either teaching you how to hunt or showing off their abilities. Either way it’s a loving gesture.

Dog’s bred for hunting will do this as well as it also shows they are a top dog!

  1. Snuggles:

If your dog likes to sleep in your bed and cuddle with you then it is a big sign that they like you. Especially after feeding time or in the morning when their motives aren’t food related.

Cats like warm and safe places to sleep, that is mostly your lap and sometimes, for inexplicable reasons, your head.

  1. Tail wagging:

Body language is an excellent way of reading your pet’s mood. When a dog is wagging their tail or their ears are lifted it is safe to say your pup is happy that you are around.

The tail is also a useful tool for reading cats. The word is if a cat’s tail is up and twitches a little that cat is sending off friendly vibes.

  1. Hanging out and following you:

If you’ve ever wondered why your pet follows you around the house or waits for you outside the bathroom, it’s simply because they enjoy your company. Dogs are pack animals and love being around family.

While cats are notoriously independent they are not above seeking company as well.

  1. Eye contact and kitty winks:

Did you know that when your cute kitty winks at you or squints they are saying ‘you’re alright?!’ It’s like a stamp of approval that shows that they trust you.

Dogs are less complicated. Sometimes all you need to do is make brief eye contact with a pooch and they are bounding over to you with a goofy look on their face.

  1. Showing their belly:

When cats show their belly to you it is a sign that they trust you. If you’ve ever had a cat scratch you when giving their tum a little rub they say it’s because it’s a breach of their trust.

On the other hand, most dogs love having their belly scratched. A dog rolls over as a sign of trust as well, but they may just want to scratch a place they can’t reach.

  1. Playing:

Playing catch or tug-of-war with your pup is a good way to strengthen your bond. There’s no harm in a bit of roughhousing as well if it doesn’t go too far. It shows that your dog likes having fun with you!

But it’s not just dogs! Cat’s love playing with their owners as well! A curled tail usually means they are in a playful mood so it’s time to bring out the toys!

  1. The big welcome home:

It’s one of the more obvious signs when you come home and your furry best friend is nearly knocking over furniture in their excitement to see you. They may spring down the hall, rub against your legs, and then pretend they never cared you left.

Puppy Play Date 101

posted by The Daily Fluff January 23, 2017 0 comments

It’s important for your pup to make new friends. It increases their socialisation skills and helps them stay calm and friendly around others. However, your dog can also help you socialise at the same time!

Looking for new friends? Look no further! Puppy play dates can be beneficial for both pup and owner.

If you’ve never had or been on a puppy play date before, here are a few ways you two can be ready before the big date!

Obedience Classes:

If you have an adorable little puppy, they’re most likely to be rambunctious, wild and looking for fun. Some obedience classes will be needed to ensure that they are well trained so that they behave on their date. You can take this opportunity for you two to make new friends. If you’re both new, talk to some other owners and ask for tips on how to better train your dog. If you two have been attending for a while, give some tips to some new owners. Also make sure your pup is socialising as well. Slowly allow them to meet other dogs that are the same size as them so that they don’t get intimidated easily. Once they’re used to meeting new friends, they’ll be able to approach anyone with friendliness and discipline.

Go for a walk:

An easy way to make new friends, especially once your pooch is well trained, is to take them for a walk. This is a great way for your dog to be exposed to breeds of all shapes and sizes in your neighbourhood. Once they’re comfortable meeting new dogs, you can take them to the local dog park where they can run and make new friends. At the same time, you can strike up a conversation with local dog owners. Laugh along together when the dogs do something cute or funny. Ask them any questions you have about raising your pet. Talk about a recent movie you saw. The conversation topics are endless!

Join a Playgroup:

There are plenty of playgroups around where you and your dog can make new friends. Google a local group that benefits both you and your pooch. Once you find one, head on down and make some new friends! Depending on your dog’s breed, joining a playgroup that caters to a certain breed may be beneficial for your pup. Especially if your pup is small, having them around the same breed or other small dogs may help them be less intimidated than if they were around bigger ones. Once they’ve settled in, strike up a conversation with other members about how your dogs are the best pets ever!

The Play Date:

Once you and your pup have made new friends, you can organise a play date! Make sure it’s at a home that’s safe and large so they have plenty of room to run around and have some fun! Also make sure that your dog is comfortable around new people and environments. You don’t want any accidents to happen if they’re shy! Set your pups up in a backyard with their new furry friends and sit down, relax and have a coffee! Just be sure you keep a watchful eye on the little ones.

“Oh no!” A Collection of Stories From Embarrassed Pet Owners

posted by The Daily Fluff December 16, 2016 0 comments

Cats and dogs aren’t the most elegant of creatures, and this results in moments where pet owners stop and think, “what ARE you doing?!” For those of you with stories that you love—or hate—to share with others, don’t worry, you’re not alone! The funny, the embarrassing and the just plain gross… read the stories below that will have you cringing, laughing and pointing fingers at your own oh so similar pet.

SMELL MY BREATH – A STORY FROM BENTLEY THE NEW FOUNDLAND:

“Sometimes when I’m feeling a little cheeky, I like to find Mum or Dad and pretend I’m about to give them a big kiss and cuddle… and, as I’m face to face with them, I let out a huge burp! Yep that’s right, I can burp louder than most humans! Safe to say Mum and Dad are not impressed by it!”

CODE RED – A STORY FROM SHERMAN THE GOLDEN & DIESEL THE BLACK LAB

“I know this looks bad Mum, but it was a code red emergency. Diesel’s ball was stuck under the couch
and you were out. We had to take matters into our own paws; just consider over turning the couch and shredding its base collateral damage. At least we got the ball..”

IS THIS FOOD? – A STORY FROM BIGGIE SMALLS THE MINIATURE DASCHUND

“I really enjoy eating number twos. Sometimes I sit behind other dogs and wait – it’s like a buffet restaurant! For some reason my parents always leave the dog park with a red face!”

OOPS, THAT WASN’T SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN – A STORY FROM BENTLEY THE NEW FOUNDLAND

“I’m not sure how I learnt this or where I picked up the habit from, but when I lift my leg to do number ones, sometimes number twos come out whilst my leg is cocked! Mum always laughs at me and I don’t get why!”

LET ME IN – A STORY FROM FREDDIE MERCURY THE BRITISH SHORTHAIR CAT

“There is nothing I hate more than missing out on the action. So, when the humans try to lock me in the living room every night, I’m determined to escape and wake them up by loudly meowing in their sleeping faces. Once, in an effort to keep me out of the bedroom, the humans started barricading the door with cases of wine (they drink far too much). However, they underestimated my strength, and I managed to move two cases of wine all on my own! The look on their faces was priceless… don’t mess with Freddie!” 😼

CAN’T LOOK YOU IN THE EYE AGAIN, DAD – A STORY FROM SPENCER THE CHOW

“Not long ago, Dad came home after staying at a friend’s place for the night. I ran to him and started to hump him. At this point, Dad didn’t know whether to laugh or cry!”

Top Places Around Melbourne To Take Your Dog On A Date

posted by The Daily Fluff December 6, 2016 0 comments

Saturday is growing closer and you can’t pick a location for date night! What’s something fun, relaxed, and an activity that you both would enjoy? Not to mention they have to let your date in…

When choosing a location for your date they must allow:

  • extremely hairy—but well sculpted—dates; and we’re not talking hipster beards or man buns
  • clingy dates who aren’t afraid to give you—and anyone else that is near—public displays of affection. Monogamy isn’t quite his/her thing
  • lack of table manners and acceptance of licking one’s bowl clean
  • dates without any sense of decency (clothing is usually minimal if not nonexistent, besides for special occasions)
  • your date to use the surrounding grass for, well, you know… you promise to clean it up!

Luckily we’ve rounded up some great places in Melbourne for you to take your pooch on a date:

To a café and for a stroll along the beach:

What’s more romantic than grabbing a bite to eat then enjoying each other’s company while you walk hand-in-lead along the beach? The amount of dog friendly cafes and beaches located locally is always growing. If you have your heart—or stomach—set on one of your favourite cafes which isn’t made for dogs, pack your dog some lunch and sit at the outdoor tables!

Midge the Maltese cross Shih Tzu says,

I love going to Priscilla Jones Cafe this time of year, there is great food for the humans as well as special treats for us pups. There’s also a huge park behind the cafe, and Port Melbourne dog friendly beach is only a short stroll away. That’s perfect in my book!”

To the movies:

How great would it be to take a date to the movies who doesn’t talk the whole way through the movie and who can’t tell you any spoilers? Dog friendly outdoor cinemas include: Moonlight Cinemas, Coburg Drive Ins (provided our dog stays inside your car) and Lunar Drive Ins. How cool is that! If you’re feeling a bit more like a night in, buy treats and watch movies curled up on the couch! We’re sure if the film has at least one animal in it you might capture (some) of your dog’s attention.

On a winery tour:

So, we may have already spoken about Gourmet Paw Prints many times here at The Daily Fluff, but how could we now mention it again? It’s the best idea ever! Take a winery tour with your dog, with the bus and locations all organized for you in either Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley or the Dandenong Ranges. A day full of food, fun and wine—which we might just add, you can’t share wine with your dog which is a bonus for you! They also organise doggy movie nights at their popup cinema at Witchmount Winery—why not do both?

On a surprise getaway:

Pack your bag, car and dog up and just go! You’ll find that most accommodation states online whether they are dog friendly or not, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find a place to accommodate to your doggy needs! Gourmet Paw Prints also organizes a two night, dog friendly luxury getaway within the Mornington Peninsula for special doggo-verseries. The sisters from Diggiddydoggydaycare also offer pet friendly cottage accommodation within Portarlington with a closed in backyard. Check it out here.

On a picnic:

One of the simplest ideas of all; take your dog on a picnic to practically anywhere! You could go to your local park, lake or even set it up within your own backyard. Pack a basket full of treats for yourself and your dog, some games and a picnic rug. We recommend that you also take a bone or a treat that takes a while for your dog to eat so you can attempt to eat your human food without sharing. If you’re in public, watch out for other dogs who might be jealous of your picnic date.

10 Little Known Facts about Dogs

posted by The Daily Fluff September 7, 2016 0 comments

Although you may think that you know your canine companion pretty well, we’re about to test your knowledge with these 10 little-known facts about dogs.

How many of these facts do you know already?

10 little-known facts about dogs:

  1. The duration of dog pregnancy is around 9 weeks — much shorter than human pregnancy!
  2. Ever wondered how your dog can eat all sorts of foods—or sometimes even inedible items — off of the floor? Dogs have roughly 1700 taste buds, all of which are on the tongue. On average, humans have around six times this amount.
  3. Despite similarities in appearances, hyenas and Tasmanian tigers (thylacines) aren’t part of the canine family.
  4. Consumption of cooked ham and ham bones can cause pancreatitis in dogs, which can be fatal.
  5. Some dog breeds actually have webbed toes. Some of these breeds include Newfoundlands, Golden Retrievers and Labradors.
  6. When a dog wags its tail, it might not mean it is happy. Tail wagging can also be a sign of other emotions such as anger or anxiety, so it’s important not to rely on tail wagging when trying to figure out a dog’s mood.
  7. It’s a myth that dogs are colour blind; they simply see colours differently to humans.
  8. A dog’s tongue actually curves underneath to scoop up water when it drinks. Dogs are unable to create suction or suck water up like humans and some other animals.
  9. Unlike other dog breeds, Basenjis cannot bark, and instead make a noise that is closer to a wine or a yodel.
  10. Seventy percent of people sign their pet’s name on greeting and holiday cards.
