For any pet lover who is looking to bring a new pup into their family, choosing the right breed can be challenge. How are you supposed to choose when there are so many amazing and adorable breeds in the world?!
While we all tend to be drawn to breeds we think are cute and cuddly, it’s important to also think about how to best care for your potential pup. This may mean that you have to make some hard practical decisions when bringing a new dog into your home.
Here are some questions you should ask yourself before picking your breed of dog.
How much space do you have?
If you’re living somewhere small you are probably better off with a smaller dog breed. If you’re living in an apartment you’re better off looking for a low energy dog so that your pup isn’t couped up and gloomy. Big dogs need a lot of space, a large backyard and most of the time a decent vacuum cleaner!
How much time to you have?
Some dogs require more attention than others and are miserable being alone too long. For example working dogs like German Shepherds and Border Collies are very active, need long walks and plenty of company. If the house is empty for most of the day and you don’t have time to go on long walks you are more suited to small dogs like Cavoodles or Maltese breeds. They are pretty happy to laze around!
Why are you getting a dog?
In order to pick the right breed, you may also need to ask yourself why you are getting a dog in the first place?
For many of us, it’s the love and companionship of having a fluff ball running around causing adorable chaos that makes us sure we need to add a new fur baby to our home. However, you may also have another practical reason, whether that’s to guard your home or to provide friendship to your young children.
